What to Wear and Pack for a Boat Day (and a Blue Cruise)
Wardrobe rules work differently afloat: there is wind, the sun reflects off the water, and the floor is wood. The good news is that the right bag is a small one. Here is the realistic list, compiled from years of hosting guests at sea.
The shoe rule
Shoes come off as you board; decks are walked barefoot or in non-marking, white-soled shoes. Heels have no business on a boat: they dent the timber and betray you in a swell. For a day tour, flip-flops are enough; on a blue cruise add light sandals or espadrilles for evening walks ashore.
The sun trio
At sea the sun works from two directions, above you and off the water. High-factor cream, a hat that actually grips, and sunglasses are the non-negotiable trio. The "grips" part matters: the meltemi wind freshens in the afternoon and collects loose hats as souvenirs.
Clothes: layered and breathable
The daytime uniform writes itself: swimsuit, a light cover-up, shorts or a linen shirt. What people forget is the evening: nights on the water feel a few degrees cooler than ashore, so pack a light jumper, two on a week-long cruise. Favour linen and cotton; synthetics cling in salty air.
In the bag
- A beach towel (bath towels and linen are provided on board; the beach towel is yours)
- Swim goggles, and your own mask if you are picky about snorkelling gear (a basic set is on most boats)
- A waterproof phone pouch and your charger
- Any regular medication; ginger sweets or sea bands if your stomach is sensitive
- A good book, which works better than the internet out there
Extra notes for a blue cruise
Bring a soft, foldable bag rather than a hard suitcase: cabin lockers love clothes, not luggage. One evening you may step ashore in a village like Cokertme or Selimiye for a jetty dinner; pack one "smart but iron-free" outfit for exactly that. The boat handles the rest; our Bodrum blue cruise page lists what is included, line by line.
Leave at home
Heels, hard cases and the third layer of "just in case" outfits. The secret of a boat holiday is lightness, and anything missing can be bought ashore in Bodrum. Plan your day on the daily boat tour page, or set your dates on Bodrum yacht charter.
